Glimpsing on our technology and value proposition
IoT is moving from hype to reality and there are not doubts that billions of connected devices will change industries and influence our lives. Asset tracking, Smart-cities, Factory automation, wearables, livestock are only some of the market segments that drive IoT growth.
Attach rate of “location” functionality in IoT devices is massive. “Where is” my sensor/device is the baseline in almost the majority of IoT use cases. The same time IoT devices need to operate 24X7 reliably and with a prolonged battery lifetime, in certain applications expected to stay alive for 5-10 years.
Despite the fact that recent wireless communication standards (NB-IoT, LORA, BLE, Sigfox, etc) have been designed bottom up for ultra low-power operation, GNSS (location) has not met the same level of optimization. As a matter of fact incorporation of GNSS chipsets/modules into IoT application still suffer from a significant battery drain due to greedy location processing, impacting negatively costs -more expensive battery- and experience -frequent recharging.
Loctio offloads the power-expensive processing by migrating it from device to Cloud/Edge resident resources. A game changing power consumption reduction can be achieved hence:
- Devices that were sacrificing the possibilities given by location due to power, can now benefit from ultra-low-power capabilities and drive brand new applications and the respective business models
- Existing devices that use location, can now prolong their battery lifespan expectancy massively
Moreover and beyond the substantial gains over power, acquiring and processing raw position information into the centralized Cloud/Edge abundant resources unlocks unprecedented merits with advanced authentication and security, anti-spoofing or cooperative positioning being some among many others.
Putting into service an RFIC able to receive GNSS signals (@L-band) is solely what would be needed from a hardware perspective. It could be a standalone RF module or an already incumbent GNSS chipset configured to operate only it’s RF part. The underlying method in contrast to conventional GNSS where satellite signals are monitored continuously requires the occasional, limited in time and on-demand sampling – snapshot – of the respective satellite signals. Engaging the RF part alone periodically or sporadically is what yields the power gains.
Transferring of the captured data over the communication link to Cloud/Edge service for the position calculation ensues right after or – depending on the application – could happen whenever later on if captured data is being stored locally. Shuttling this bunch of bits through the IoT device/sensor wireless interface costs in power terms and counter balances the profits obtained previously.
Loctio tackles this backlash ahead of the competition by tapping into a blend of own developed algorithms and bleeding edge technologies. As a result just a literally handful of Kbytes is required for a precise position calculation.
Other trade-offs between accuracy, sensitivity or security and battery lifespan or Cloud/Edge processing load could inhabit as well a specific application use case. In Loctio we are working together with the customer for setting the goals, making the trade-offs and co-creating a bespoke solution able to optimize the respective business case and maximize the premium value.
Currently our Cloud infrastructure has been deployed into Amazon Web Services while we are actively enriching our ecosystem with other Cloud providers, IoT Platforms and Telecoms.
